First and foremost....Verify that license!! All NC bail agents must carry a valid NC Bail Agent License issued by the NC Department of Insurance at all times when conducting business. Don't just look at that license, run that number and make sure the person you are about to conduct business with is legit and who they claim to be.
As the old saying goes, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably isn't. Bail bonding is a legal and contractual agreement. There should be paperwork and a contract of some kind as well as a receipt given to you for any monies paid. Read that paperwork, keep copies and receipts.
While by itself not a guaranteed indicator of any type of scam, money solicitation over the phone, prior to any discussion or paperwork completion should raise a RED FLAG. Remember to verify the person you are talking to, read over any contracts or paperwork and verify terms BEFORE sending any money or providing any payment information.
While most bail agents and companies now accept multiple forms of payment, be mindful of some of the common tactics used by scammers to steal your money.
-They instruct you to purchase gift cards at a local store and provide them the card information....RED FLAG
-They instruct you to wire/send money to a private 3rd party...RED FLAG
-They instruct to use your money to purchase Bitcoin and send the Bitcoin to them as payment...RED FLAG
-They instruct you to sign over ownership of any personal or real property titles or deeds, in lieu of premium payment...RED FLAG
